Wrong. The 4th decimal is 5 so the third decimal gets rounded up from a 1 to a 2! :pmsl:

Dude, seriously that is THE most ironic post I have ever read on here. π IS 3.142 to 3 decimal places.

When looking at any number of decimal places you ALWAYS have to take into account the number AFTER the place you are rounding to. In this case, it is followed by a 5 so you round UP. If it was followed by 0,1,2,3, or 4 it would be 3.141 but as it is a 5 you round the third decimal UP. You would round up if the number is followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9. Note that all 10 numbers are used and you have a 50/50 split in terms of their rounding allocation.

As you are rounding to the nearest place, I am sure that you can grasp that when the numbers following the third decimal, the 1, are 5 and 9 so it is therefore 59% of the way towards being a 2, hence you round up?

Capiche or would you like to own yourself some more? :capwned:
