Set your camera up on a tripod so it'll be the same for all photos, use AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing), it'll be in your menu system. Set them 1 stop apart, ie. -1 0 +1, set your camera onto the two second timer, take the photo as normal and it'll take 3 shots at those different exposures.
Get it back into photomatix, load the photos in, let the program blend it together etc, tonemap it and voila, play till your hearts content.
The only way you'll get anywhere with HDR is just practicing, it's quite tricky to pick up.
