Well Ive seen this on a few of the photography forums, but thought I'd try it on here. Basic concept is I post a photo to represent each day of my year.

Realistically Im not going to get to take photos each day but i will post recent photographs taked for each of the 52 weeks of the year. Some may be funny, others crap, some messed with other not, but will just see how it works.

Hoping with will show my progression while Im here in Toronto, and also show improvements in my photography but time will tell for that.

As a start date Im going to use the date I bought my new camera, my Panasonic Lumix FZ18, which is Thursday 4th June 2009 - so week 1 can start from the!

C&C welcome but please serious comments only, dont spam this thread as I want to try make this work.

Bed, maybe do a 52? One picture a week?

Good point, might just try and update it on a weekly basis, more realistic to try and get a few photos a week. Cheers for that Jaffa

#3 does it for me Ben. Maybe biased as I love wildlife photography but that is definately the best.

I find that Wildlife photography takes far less skill than most other photography, but takes LOADS more patience, time and luck. Oh, and a decent lens.

Patience > Skill IMO

Mike H

I agree Jaf, patience is the key. A good camera and patience, and time = some good shots.

Skill and not much time = maybe one lucky decent print.

Loving the idea though ben, and I love the first picture mate. :tu:

I've been patient waiting for you to get pictures of me on the bike.

I'm hoping that when the day eventually comes, they'll be fantastic shots.

That's a great shot, rule of thirds shining through :tu:

Go part-ex your camera for a DSLR. Hard to give critique on this shot as it's a minter, but if anything the focus isn't the sharpest. It's got a great DOF but not very sharp.

I'd sign up on talkphotography for some serious, constructive critisism. I've learnt so much from that site.

ben306
11th June 2009, 08:22 PM
Cheers fella.

I plan to upgrade to a DSLR but its just a matter of saving up the money, Im looking at $600-800 for a set, where as I picked up this camera for $200 so its just got the ball rolling.

WEEK 2

All photos un-edited ecept where I have said. Taken over the weekend. Dont really think any are top notch, just happy with the results of some but I still know theres lots more room for improvement yet.

Well yet more birds, but simply because I went fishing on saturday, and these things kept landing around me so how could I note.

8 - The Big Stretch

9

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/Ben306/My%20365/9.jpg

Then just having a play with contrasts and came up with this, kind of like the effect, almost looks oil painted.

10

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/Ben306/My%20365/11.jpg

Took this one while sat in the pub on friday night, was on Guiness 7 at this point (was 2 pints for $8 before 7pm) but still happy with how it came out.

11

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/Ben306/My%20365/12.jpg

Not 100% happy with this, I know what I was trying to achieve but I just couldnt get all the lines to run 'square'. Think Ill be trying to capture a few more like this tho and hopefully see the improvements.

12

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/Ben306/My%20365/13.jpg

Finally, I was at one of the many festivals yesterday, 1000 Tastes of Toronto, and they had 1000 plates for people to use to comment

Cheers fella, means alot!

I plan to keep trying anyhow, thinking of getting out with the tripod one night this week, see how Im feeling

Jaffa
16th June 2009, 03:34 PM
In my personal experience,

#11 - Wider aperture. Focus on the 'Harley Davidson' badge and you'll have an uber DOF.

#13 - Same again. Widen your aperture. Just get a few of the plates in focus and leave the rest to the imagination.

Week 3

Few shots Ive got from this weeks playing. Im starting to feel like Im struggling with subjects on what to take, I like to just wonder around and take whatever I see around me, Im not one to concentrate on one subject but I sometimes feel this would be better from my learning?? I dunno, see how things pan out.

Anyhow, as you know from another one of my threads, I had a play at long exposure shots from my balcony, so a few of them are in this week, aswell as a few from my walks home from work.

As always C&C welcome, and like I said, Im just wanting to progress's so be it good or bad!

Definately getting better with your composition, not keen on the cropping though. #18 could be such an awesome picture if cropped properly.

Keep it up dude.

LM
22nd June 2009, 05:15 PM
Yeah, definatly improved, you can tell you're putting a lot more effort and thought into your shots, which proves that if you put the effort in, you get rewarded.

Number 14 I like, and it works really well in B&W.

Number 15 would have taken the lot for me, if it wasn't ever so slightly soft/out of focus, the photo itself and the composition works for me, its very abstract and random, which can sometimes work.

On the lambourghini wing mirror shot, I'd have tried to get a bit closer to it, and maybe tried to get the interior through the glass on the mirror, they always look good.

ben306
22nd June 2009, 05:20 PM
Cheers you two, good to get abit of an idea as to how other people see my photos, thats how you improve :)

15, was taken in a museum, and was bad lighting for taking photos, I had no tripod and the flash just didnt get the drama in the photo.

As for the car photos, they where taken through an 8ft security fence haha

LM
22nd June 2009, 05:31 PM
If I was you fella, get your tripod and make a trip back to that museum, theres some good abstract shots to be had of that painting IMO.

Well Im sorry, but this next batch of photos I dont feel are my best. I've been made busy this last week (friend got made redundant and his visa is linked to his work, no work no visa :()

Anyhow, managed to get out on saturday evening, went for a walk as my sunburn was killing from my fishing all day. Got a few snaps which are ok, theres one I really like.

Then got a few at night, they had a massive fireworks display from a ship out on the lake, and I was sat on my balcony with a beer so grabbed the camera and tried a few shots. Other than that, not much really.

I find a few of my photos are a little 'soft' and some a bit noisy so I think its time to start learning about the settings some more and to try and get the most from my camera now.

Again all are un-editted and straight from the camera, I really need to start playing with some photo-editor.

As always C&C welcome

Well this weeks photos, sorry they are a little late.

Basically, had more fireworks, so again been messing from my apartment's balcony.

Other than that, been tied up with Caz so not been managing to get out as much as I'd like but these are the ones from this week.

Well this weekend Ive been to the Toronto Indy Car all weekend and must have took over a 1000 photos, most where shite, some ok and then about 100 where good but I feel these are the better ones I got.

1st time shotting motorsports and I have to say, because it was a street track and you are so close to them, and there were 3 fences in my way on most of it, it meant it was hard work getting pictures.

Anyhow, as always C&C welcome (some of the cropping is ott to try and cut out some of the fencing)

I know its the same skyline but Im having to do with what Ive got at the minute and the lack of transport doesnt help.
I was late getting up one day last week, and seeing I'd have missed the train I usually catch (they are every hour) I decided to take my time and have breakfast on the balcony, anyhow it was a lovely sunrise so got the camera and tripod and snapped this :)

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/Ben306/My%20365/Sunrise.jpg

Well Caz was having to do some work from home last night, so grabbed the camera and went out, headed down to the docklands which is a good 2 hours walk, and the streetcars where packed because the footie was on, anyhow, by the time I nearly got there it was dark and pretty fucking creepy if Im honest, so headed back into downtown.

Not overly impressed with what I go, still dont feel like Ive found my 'style' as I felt abit like I was just taking photos for the sack of taking some photos.

But had a play this morning and come up with these which I quite like now

And then some from this week.

This is the 1st time I have ever taken pictures of people. Im at a friends wedding in a few weeks back in the UK so would like to get a few good photos and figured this was the perfect time to get a few practice snaps in.

Bit of background.

We found out a friend of ours had never had a surprise party so the plans started and for some reason she has an obsession with pirates, so that was the theme. It all went very well and games where played in the local park. We managed to rope her mum and dad in aswell which was nice.

Anyhow, like I said, the 1st attempts of 'people' photography and I didnt want the usually 'false' posing photographs so stepped back abit and got in with the zoom of everyone enjoying themselfs and not really noticing I was snapping a few shots.

All taken on my Panasonic Lumix FZ18 by a slightly drunk me.

1, The Birthday Girl, Carole along with Shaun, gearing up for the 3 legged race.

5, Finally, Caroles (The birthday girls) Dad, who unfortuately is fighting a terminal illness. I actually really like this shot and am thinking of getting it printed and framed for Carole.

I did get a few indoors but with the limitation of a pop up flash, I found none came out so well.

Then something Ive been trying for a while, but I feel I need a busier time, a bigger and darker station to get the full effects of what Im after on the subway!

 Nicely done, probably one of your best shots.

IMO, go as warm as possible with your White balance and add bags of contrast. Be onto a winner then fella. Shame I don't have the RAW here to show you...

I need to start taking photos in RAW really, but at the minute, because I havent been editting them I just havent been bothering.

Got limited software for minor editting here on the works PC but thats all I can get away with downloading.

As for back home, we only have a tiny 8inch note book laptop so cant even see the photos anyway!! lol

'Missing a Blade'

Loving how the colours of the petals change on this one as the light is on them and they overlap!

Few Bird ones, as they were resting up in the flowers themselves

For this one I was trying something a little different. Wanted to get the 'image' of an eye when you quickly look at it, but once you look a little closer you realise its a reflection of me

And finally a few of my better ones from Niagara Falls

Been a while since I posted in here, simply because I havent been getting out with the camera enough.

Anyhow, I managed to get out with the camera this weekend for a walk around Toronto Islands all afternoon and managed to get a few photos

As always C&C welcome, good and bad as I only want to improve

They say that selective colouring doesn't work, well #1 is good, I like it. As I said on Flickr, the skies are pretty awesome over there, the clouds in #3 are uber.

Cheers fella. Although, very little editing done on these. Just the contrast upped on a couple and thats it! Pretty much straight from the camera

Ohh and ve had an email to say some of my photos have been selected for a 'guide' publication for Niagara Falls. Even though I wont get any money from it, It means I'll actually have some of my work published and thats always a good step in the right direction.

Cheers fella!

Really feeling like Im finding my 'style' now. Tho would love to try and get some different stuff. Feel like Im stuck sometimes as I cant get out of the city. But the trees are all turning now, and fall should provide a few decent photo opportunities over the next week or so.

Ben, I've also found my 'style' and trying anything outside of that style usually fails.

Style > Skill

You've come along way with your photography dude, pictures are stunning and looks like you have an excellent place to keep learning and taking excellent images.

We've not seen a sunset like that in weeks and weeks now. I'm bitter and jealous.

Cheers fella! I have been quite lucky I suppose with location and the like!

Just know theres so much more I'd like to have a try at!

As for coming along way. yeah, definately, but thats just come from messing really, nothing more!

Yep, it was the same for me. See a shot you like, figure out how it's done and try it yourself. Learn so much this way.

Give me a shout when you're back in the UK and we'll get out one night, me and Paul (ENVC) usually get out at least once a week, I've found my personal standards to be higher than my photography skill of late though, I just can't seem to get the shots I want at the minute. Some of them are good, but none really worthy of posting. Hence why I'm jealous at the lush scenery you have over there.

I AER JEALOUS!

Well few more from the last week. Have been trying to get out of my usualy photos and get something a little different, but I think they are only 'OK' really.

No amazing shots but meh!

Just for fun

The Autumn 'Fall' colours (this is when Id love to get outside the city and see it properly)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2645/4047147977_e3f45cbf03.jpg

Just trying something a little different by over processing it to try and reflect the madness of this thing

And just loved the way you got a proper illusion off the side of this building as you looked up, the more I looked at it the more it messed with my eyes

Need to be very careful, look at the sky, the PP has just brought loads of noise into the image.

I like that first one. Nice depth of field.

The second one has a bit of motion blur - needed to up the ISO a bit maybe.
